How AI search changed who gets the call.

The short version: a homeowner used to get ten results and pick one. Now they get one answer with two alternates, and the business that is named gets the call. The way a business gets named is different from the way it used to rank, and most companies have not noticed yet.

What actually changed.

On 183 of the keywords we track for our clients, an AI-generated answer now appears above the first organic result. Two years ago that number was zero. The answer is not a list of ten links. It is a paragraph that names one business, sometimes two, and explains why. The homeowner reads the paragraph, not the links under it.

The same thing is happening away from Google. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 45 percent of consumers now use an AI assistant to find a local business, up from 6 percent a year earlier. When a homeowner types "my AC died, who should I call" into ChatGPT, they get a name, a rating, a reason, and a phone number. They do not get a search results page.

Ten results became one answer
The page used to distribute attention. The answer concentrates it. Position three used to get a fifth of the clicks; now it may not be mentioned at all
The answer is written, not ranked
A ranking is a list ordered by relevance. An answer is a claim about which business is best, assembled from facts the model can verify. Those are different tests
Reviews are read, not counted
The model does not count stars. It reads what reviewers say and looks for the specific language a homeowner used in the question: same day, licensed, on time, sent photos
Consistency is a ranking factor now
Hours, services and phone numbers that disagree across the site, the Business Profile and the directories are the fastest way to be skipped. The model cannot cite a fact it cannot confirm

When was the last time you asked an assistant the question your customers ask, and checked whether your name came back?

What decides which business gets named.

Four inputs, in the order they are weighed.

01

Structured facts on your own site

Services, service area, hours, licensing, years in business, stated plainly and marked up so a machine can read them without guessing. This is the citation the model prefers, because it is the source it can quote.

02

A complete Business Profile

Categories, services, attributes, photos and Q and A. The Profile is the second source the model checks, and a thin one reads as a thin business.

03

Review language that matches the question

A homeowner asks for a plumber who can come today. The reviews that say "came the same afternoon" are the reviews that get you named. Volume matters less than specificity.

04

Agreement across every listing

The same name, address, phone, hours and services on every directory and data aggregator. Disagreement is not penalized; it is simply not cited, which amounts to the same thing.

What to do first.

Do not start with content. Start with the facts. Take your ten most important pages and make sure each one states, in plain text and in schema, what the service is, where you provide it, and what a homeowner needs to know to choose you. Then fix the Business Profile. Then run a listing scan and correct every disagreement. Only then does new content earn its keep, because now there is a consistent set of facts for the content to point at.

The whole sequence takes a competent team about eight weeks for a single-location business. The reason to move now is the same reason it was worth ranking first in 2015: the businesses that get named early become the businesses that keep getting named, because the model learns from the answers it has already given.

Questions owners ask about AI search

Does AI search matter for a local trade, or only for big brands?

It matters more for a local trade. A homeowner asking who to call for a burst pipe is exactly the question an assistant answers with a name. Brands get research questions; trades get the call.

Do I have to stop doing SEO?

No. The same facts, citations and reviews that get you named in an answer are the ones that rank you on the page underneath it. Search Visibility Architecture is one body of work with two outputs.

Can I pay to be in the answer?

Sponsored placements are appearing inside assistants, and we run them where they exist. They only help if the organic answer already knows who you are; a paid mention beside an answer that names your competitor does not win the call.

How do I check where I stand today?

Run the free grader on this site with your website address. It returns how the assistants describe you, what they get wrong, and who they name instead.

Start with the gap that is costing you the most.

Most owners do not need all of this. They need the one thing currently leaking revenue,

  • Which channel is producing work, and which is producing noise
  • Where your visibility drops off against the companies taking your calls
  • The one fix that pays for itself fastest
  • What we would leave alone for now, and why
